When I was 20 I was playing around with my young niece and nephew and fell down on the floor landing really hard on my tailbone. It hurt for days and I thought maybe I had bruised it, but the pain got so severe I finally decided to see a doctor. They x-rayed it thinking that I had broken it, but saw nothing on the x-ray. The doctor sent me home with really strong pain meds that did nothing, but put me to sleep. Over the course of a few days my pain got worse and worse. I began running a high fever that got as high as 105 and my pain began to move up my back. After about a week, my back pain was so severe that I could not even walk, but could only manage to crawl. Finally I decided to have someone take me to the ER where they found nothing and again sent me home with advil for the fever and more pain meds. Frustrated I went to my family doctor to look at it. He informed me that it was an absess and that it needed to be lanced. Before doing that however he had to do a series of spinal taps to determine just how far the infection had spread. After being poked in the back several times he informed me that the infection was traveling up my spinal column and had stopped just at the base of my neck. He informed me that if the infection was not taken care of soon that I could quite literally die if it reached my brain. So immediately he lanced it there in the office. THE PAIN WAS EXCRUCIATING! The chemical component of the infection somehow reacted with the anesthesia and kept it from working properly so I could literally feel every cut he was making. He pressed to get all the infection out and then cleaned it a swab dipped in peroxide. After that he filled it with packing and sent him home with a next week appointment for a surgeon to look at it. The surgeon informed me that this was probably present since birth and that I had "ruptured" it when I fell on it. The surgery was set and I was actually looking forward to it if it meant the pain would be over. Two days before the surgery it came back and had to be lanced yet again. I was put on strong antibiotics to kill the infection and then the surgery was rescheduled. The surgery thankfully went beautifully and I haven't had any trouble with it since. Only occasionally do I have discomfort if I sit down for a long period of time. I hope no one ever has to experience the pain I felt with this thing.
