So i developed my cyst about 2 years ago. It wasn't too big when I first noticed it and I got to the Doctor early. First treatment I got was antibiotics to see if that helped, let me tell you, this is a waste of time and money. Unless there is an actual infection there, you may as well skip this step.
Our next treatment was lancing with local anaestethic. This wasn't so bad but it left an open wound that continued to drain. I didn't do anything about it for another 2 years and I lived with a draining wound that would soak into my underwear on a daily basis. Eventually I started having problems with it plugging up and I would actually have to drain it myself at home! That's when I decided to have the surgery done, me and my doctor had discussed it 2 years earlier.
that brings us to 5 weeks ago. My surgeon, who is very experienced with this type of surgery, elected to go with the open wound with marsupilization (spelling??). After doing the research, I felt that this was probably the best option. We booked it for the end of April.
Thanks to this website I read lots of info on post surigcal care, so I was pretty confident I would be ok.
The first week I took off work and was on my stomach all day, everyday while my wife did the dressing changes for me. I have to say the most frustrating part of this whole process is the bandages and tape. My advice is to invest in some good tape, the crappy stuff, like paper tape, comes off easily and sticks to your underwear. This is extremely annoying and is probably why I had such a bad second week.
My second week i had a bit of a meltdown and took it out on my wife. I thought it was getting infected, so I went to the doctor and he agreed that it may have been starting to, so I was put on antibiotics.
Fastforward to week 5 and I'm doing much better. I came to terms with the stupid tape and I am able to sit as of this week. I made an arrangement with my employer to be able to lay down in an office for the past 3 weeks, which worked out well. I saw my surgeon last week and he said everything is progressing fine and I probably have 2 more months until it is closed up, so that would bring me to 3 months.
All in all, it hasn't been easy, but I am really looking forward to getting back to normal again as i am an avid hockey player. I will update in a couple more months. Thanks to this website for all the info and support, I am so glad I was able to read up on other people's experiences before I went for surgery. Good luck to everyone, it does get better!!
