“I had been diagnosed with intermammary pilonidal sinus when I was 14 years old. one day after returning from school, I noticed a small reddish bump on my chest which I showed my mom. She dismissed it as being a normal pimple and asked me not to worry about it too much. a few days later, the bump turned into an abscess and I started experiencing pain.Luckily, my dad happens to be a doctor and so I immediately went to him and told him my problems. we then went to see a general surgeon who diagnosed my case as a folliculitis. I had to immediately start taking anti biotics and pain killer. I now pop anti biotics like a kid popping candies.
My bump recurred after 5 months and I was prescribed the same meds once again. It went away.
After a few months, the abscess popped yet again. Now I was 15, and my doctor diagnosed my case as pilonidal sinus and advised me that I undergo surgery for the same. Due to my school work, I put off the surgery for a year. I had gotten my abscesses drained from time to time during this time period.
I went under the knife when I was 16 and had to miss out on a lot f school work. Additionally, I failed 2 of my mid term exams as well because I could not study very well. Also when the time to reappear in the exam came, I failed yet again. This disorder sure does suck the life around and out of you.
Post recovery I had minimal scarring and occasional occurrence of small holes that were drained. I was getting on good with my life, when about an year later there popped yet another bump above my scar. Now I was scared that my nightmarish days would return. It was drained and thankfully I was told that I did not require surgery for the time being.
Fast forward to march of 2017. I was in my second semester of freshmen year of college in a state different from my hometown.I noticed upon my return from an outing, that there was a cherry red inflammation on my chest and the pain was too much to bear.I couldn’t sleep that night. My cyst had recurred and I was really depressed and angry to be the only youth in my vicinity to suffer from such problems. I immediately called my dad and started my antibiotic course and some pain killer. Within the next two days, the inflammation had increased to the size of a medium sized grape. Thankfully it was the weekend and I along with my brother and aunt went to the hospital.
The doctor here, inject a few injections of local anesthesia ( I couldn’t count how many as I was busy crying and dealing with the excruciating pain of needles being injected into my chest while I was awake) and drained the entire pus, cleaned the wound and dressed it. I had to follow it up with changing my dressing every 2-3 days for the next 2 weeks. She had also confirmed my fear that the cyst had recurred and that I require yet another surgery. Since I was in the middle of writing my University exams, I put the thing off.
Now I am in the middle of my summer break and today I went to see my doctor because another abscess has recurred this month again. Now I am on a course of yet another anti biotic, pain killer and what not. And will undergo yet another surgery in a short while.
I was feeling very low when I came across this site and reading about people who have felt and experienced what I have makes me feel positive that I don’t stand alone. Thank you everyone for sharing their stories. I hope my story helps anyone in any manner who is out there.”
