“Hi everyone!
I am a 20 year old female, and just 3 days ago finally got diagnosed with pilonidal disease, and with a pilonidal cyst with abscess. Anyone who has this knows how painful it is! I started having the worst tailbone pain ever a few weeks ago and knew I didn’t injure it or anything. I went to the Er in excruciating pain. All they did was take an X-ray and said nothing was wrong and sent me home with a paper on back pain and no medicine for pain management. I left very frustrated, so I made a follow up the next day with a doctor at my pcp office. All he did was push on it and prescribed me flexeril. I knew it wasn’t just a muscle problem. So I then made an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. Got seen a few days later and was left with the same thing. Coccyx pain and a prescription for steroids and anti inflammatories. I absolutely knew there was something more severe wrong than just a “sore ass”. So tired and fed up with running around I did my own research and came along to pilonidal cysts. I just knew this was probably my problem so I made yet another appointment with my pcp and mentioned to her my concern for this cyst. Well I was right! She was the first doctor to actually take me serious and thoroughly examine the area. She instantly knew it was a pilonidal cyst and put me on antibiotics and said if it didn’t go away to see a colon and rectal surgeon. Well the next morning I woke up in the worst pain I have ever endured and said I’ve had enough so I made an emergency appointment the same day with a colon and rectal surgeon. Well once he examined me he said he has no idea how I’ve gone this long in pain because it was huge and had no idea how any doctor could have missed this! He immediately lanced the cyst and drained it and I had immediate relief! It felt so great once the pressure was relieved. After he then recommended once healed that I come back to have the tissue and pilonidal sinus removed. I finally got this taken care of and learned that it could have ended very badly because my abscess was huge!! I was very very angry that after seeing all those doctors and specialist and being on unnecessary medicines, that I myself am the one who figured out my problem. I strongly encourage that if you’re having any of the symptoms that you mention it and insist they check. If it weren’t for my stubbornness and strong sense of body, I could have ended up septic in the hospital! I know googling symptoms can be very misleading but in this case it brought me not only a peace of mind but a huge physical relief from pain!”
