“My son recently fought a long battle against pilonidal cyst disease. I have read many of the stories and hope that our experience might help you. I have been a medical surgical nurse for 30 years, and yet, was totally confused as to why there were so many different surgeries offered to fix this problem. My son’s started with a small open area at the base of his coccyx (tailbone) but had developed a tunnel which exited above his rectum. Initially, he thought it was a pimple but came to me when it began to drain. We saw several physicians before seeing a surgeon.
We wasted time and months of his life in seeing the wrong people. He ended up with a local surgeon, of good reputation, doing a closed procedure. After his surgery, he was in the hospital one week later, with the incision opening up and draining. We spent four more months with the incision failing to heal, going to wound clinic and using a wound vac. He appeared to heal with the wound vac, but after it was removed the holes began to open up again and to drain. He felt hopeless at times and I was so frustrated in trying to find out what to do for him. After reading on this website, we found Dr. Immerman, in Eue Claire, WI. I called and spoke with his office and emailed pictures of his wound to them. He was scheduled for surgery the following Monday. Dr. Immerman has devoted 20 years to this problem. He uses the Cleft Lift method. We were an 8 hour drive from Eau Claire, WI, but had my son lye down on a foam mattress and made the trip. They see people from all over the country for this problem, failed surgeries, simple and complex cases. The hospital staff and Dr. Immerman’s office staff were outstanding. My son was out of surgery and we were back at out motel, close to the hospital, that evening. We opted to stay for one week at the motel until his drain was removed, so we had at least one follow up visit with Dr. Immerman. You can also opt to go home and follow up with your own Dr. depending on your case. Please take the time to read about the cleft lift method and why it is so successful in treating this condition, This method prevents further problems so this is not a chronic condition. My son’s incision healed and he was able to get back into life. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for this website and how finding Dr. Immerman changed our lives. I hope this helps some of you who are struggling and clears up some of the confusion as to what to do for this problem.”
