“My story began in early January 2014 with a draining but relatively innocuous cyst at the top of my cleft. The doctor recommending a “scraping” to clear out debris and promote healing. The procedure was done under general and was relatively minor.
Healing was going alright after two months until I had a fall and reopened the wound. This led a new procedure on May 5th, a closed-wound excision in the midline (I know, brutal choice). The recovery was truly miserable, and the surgery officially failed after about 4 weeks (reopening, draining, etc.)
At the end of July, I consulted with Dr. Michael Hueneke in Nashville, a plastic surgeon who has been performing successful cleft lifts for year. Sensing our frustration, he recommended the cleft lift but reminded us that no surgery is a sure fix. My case was particularly worrisome as the wound was open all the way down to within a few centimeters of my anus, which increased the chances of delayed-healing.
Luckily, the surgery was a wonderful, rousing, better-than-I-could-have-ever-imagined success. The VERY next day I felt basically fine, was walking around (slowly) and could even sit for about 10 minutes. After 4 weeks, I was sitting in the car and driving 6 hours. The area near my anus is closed and I feel better than I have felt in a long time.
I owe everything to Dr. Hueneke in Nashville and would encourage any of you looking for a solution to inquire about the Bascom techniques, or, as it is known around here, the “cleft-lift.” “
